Næste – The next generations’ shed is built from previous generations building waste

Why?

5 mill. m² of natural slates, wood boards and batterns, steel gutters, clay pantiles, pine tree wood rafters and bricks wasted every year in roof renovations.

More than 1 mill. m² sheds in Denmark need replacement every year.

In total, 40.000 tons of CO₂ savings every year.

Vision

Næste is more than just a shed. It is a service offered to support our everyday lives around the shed. At the same time we want to show the building industry that, by thinking and working differently together, we can change the way we build for future generations.
Tomorrow, all secondary buildings should be built from quality materials wasted in building renovations and demolitions today.
With Næste, we introduce a new circular shed typology in the market, providing real estate owners, and their stakeholders and users, with the opportunity to take an easy first step towards a green transition. Næste will offer different services supporting the users' “life around the shed." We hereby create a strong platform for other resource-efficient strategies in a shared economy for all users to benefit from. By introducing Næste we want everybody to see and feel that the transition to a sustainable society is feasible, durable and very attractive.

Short description

Næste is a high-quality shed building system for household, municipal and office buildings providing unheated storage space (waste fractions, bicycles, etc.) built from recycled roof materials. These waste fractions of high-quality building materials have an estimated future lifetime of 50-200 years and are today downcycled and crushed into landfill or used for heating.

The demand for unheated storage and shelter space is increasing as is the demand for integrated services optimizing its use (electrical charging, data on use, space, weather, maintenance etc.). Sheds available in the market today are often unattractive, not environmentally friendly, or not optimized for their purpose. They typically have a short life cycle and do not integrate into their surroundings, socially or contextually.

Næste is beautiful, functional, sustainable, and durable. It has a modern design with inspiration from the heritage building culture, fitted to local weather conditions. Winning the Circular Construction Challenge gave us an important opportunity to accelerate the process of innovation needed to rethink and optimize the entire value chain and challenge the way we traditionally work and innovate in the building industry.

With this prize and the facilitated innovation process, we are now able to offer all real estate owners a strong value-adding and service-minded shed. A solution that doesn't compromise between the economic, social and environmental value, but rather shows that the attractive solution on all parameters is also the beautiful and inspirational one.

Overall progression

How has your solution developed since February 2019?
We are now a stand-alone company, operating independently as a Circular Chain Operator securing the quality, time, and economy of the full product. To the customer, we are a one-stop-shop offering full service from architectural counsel to mass-customized shed delivered on time.

Takeaways from the innovation phase

What have been the most significant benefits from the 6-month innovation phase?
The innovation processes across the value chain with different partners, innovating every process and challenging the normal way of doing things in the building sector. Focusing on creating value for others and optimizing the collective process, and not just sub-optimization. Ultimately, this creates value for everyone and this has been a true joy to experience first hand.

Next step

What are the next steps for your team?
We are establishing our name and brand awareness and are ready to meet with new potential collaborators and clients so that we can get even more know-how and optimization into the processes. We aim to enter delivery agreements with at least 10 new professional clients within the next year.

The future

Where do you see your solution in one year?
A year from now we will be scaling up the prefabricated solution much further on the basis of a strong organization and a circular and LEAN production line.
